Very Often in my Life, I have been
guilty of trying to be God!, pray I would, but I took the maxim of
“God Helps those who help themselves” literally. May be you do
too.
Recently, I watched again the old
classic “Anna and the King”. A beautiful story of a strong
willed teacher Anna in an alien culture, teaching English to the
children of the Siamese King.
The folly of this attempt “to be
God”, was made starkly evident to me during the movie, the part where
Lady Tuptim, the Kings favorite concubine is publicly caned and then
beheaded. You may be wondering where am I going with this, hang on
I'll get there. Patience!..all things come to those who wait!
Anna was present in the crowd, during
the public canning of Lady Tuptim & her lover. Unbeknownst to
her, the King, had planned to intervene after the canning, pardoning
Lady Tuptim and her Lover, thus saving both their lives.
However, Anna in her mistaken zeal to
take matters in her own hands i.e Be King! (Oops, Queen), challenges
the public canning of Lady Tuptim with a very vocal threat of using
her supposedly “connections with the King” to “Talking to the
King & Changing” the end result. Anna is physically removed
from the area, storms into the Palace and forces herself into an
audience with the King.
The King, calmly admonishes Anna about
her public outburst..poignantly he says...”You Would Not Let Me Be
King!, I had planned to pardon Lady Tuptim & Her Lover after the
canning; however, with your public outburst of telling the King what
needs to be done, have taken this Privilege & Right away from the
King.!”.....how telling!..I often in my very human nature, tell God
how to be God! To bend to my will, my way, my thoughts, my
aspirations...I will try to
Let God Be!.
